Congrats to Prof. Elon Lindenstrauss!

I just wanted to say congratulations to Professor Elon Lindenstrauss, my professor for MAT 215, Analysis of a Single Variable, at Princeton. As of yesterday morning, he is one of the recipients of the Fields Medal for 2010 and also the first Israeli mathematician to do so! It is truly an honor to have been able to be taught by such a great mathematician.

P != NP?! Perhaps.

Okay, so I am in no way qualified to make any statements about the veracity of this, but I think it’s kinda important that I put this here. So today, a story came out about an HP Labs researcher Vinay Deolalikar, who claims to have a proof that P is not equal to NP (the general consensus in the community). From what I’ve read so far about other, more qualified people commenting on the paper, it does not seem blatantly false or anything. Read On →

Jolicloud 1.0 + Dell Mini 10v

In my continuous pursuit of trying out cool, new software and hardware, I recently decided to give Jolicloud a go. To be certain, this isn’t something that I just decided one day. In fact, I had seen and done a bit of research into Jolicloud many months ago, long before any announcement of the 1.0 release. The one major factor that stopped me from pursuing it any further was the actual fact that it was a cloud-based OS and therefore, I assumed that without a persistent connection, I would helpless. Mozilla Labs "The Crowdsourcing Project"

Hey so there’s a couple updates I wanted to talk about here. First, let me address the title. Right, so I was selected to be one among the team of 15 students chosen around the world to participate in the latest Mozilla Labs Concept Series project, called “The Crowdsourcing Project”. You can check out our homepage right over here for more details about the project, but i’ll copy-paste the Overview here for convenience: Read On →

Rooted Droid + Android 2.2

So I finally took the leap and rooted my Motorola Droid! It was a completely painless procedure. My main goal was in order to get full access to my own phone (which I think should be a given, since the device is mine..). Then, I got a little zealous and decided to take it a bit further. I figured hell, why not see what flashing Froyo will do? So I did. Read On →

A Week Off

So I’m going to be taking next week off just so I have some more time to relax and refocus. I’ve felt that I never really got a chance to properly recharge between the end of finals and the start of my summer work. As I’ve said before, I just want some time free to think. More than anything, I enjoy having the time to do nothing in particular and not feel guilty about it either. Read On →

Motorola Droid, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4

Okay so the deal is that I bought an iPhone 3GS last year after wanting it for a long time and then I registered for Google I/O and I got a free Droid (couldn’t actually make it to the conference because of a computer science final) so I didn’t get the free HTC Evo) and then now I ordered and got an iPhone 4 so that’s how I have three phones. Quick Update on Summer

I’ll write more later on but I just wanted to give a quick update on how my summer has been going. So I’ve started my research at Princeton about three and a half weeks ago and so far it’s going pretty well. Mostly it’s a lot of data analysis work and a fair bit of programming. That’s a very good thing. Honestly the more I think about it the more I realize that programming is what I love more than anything else. Read On →

Google Code Jam Global Round 1A

Okay so I didn’t make this time. I had enough solutions right to qualify but didn’t do it fast enough. And considering that the competition was on the same weekend that I had to move out of Princeton, I didn’t have the time or energy to do compete in Rounds 1B or 1C. But it’s all okay because I had a fun time and now summer is here! At least for the next two weeks before I have to get back and start summer research. Read On →

nVidia Drivers and Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid

I just completed finally correcting the mess that my upgrade to Lucid from Jaunty left. Essentially, I didn’t notice any issues for a few weeks but then a recent update resulted in my nVidia drivers failing to load and me being left in “low graphics” mode. I spent the past few days trying to figure out what the hell actually caused my graphics card driver of all things to fail randomly. Read On →
